Collection: Awajun - Ceramics from Peru

These ceramics are handmade by the women of the Awajun indigenous community that inhabits the Peruvian Amazon. In the Awajun universe, ceramics represent the confluence of these womens' cultural understanding and the materials available in their environment. This ancestral knowledge has been passed from mother to daughter for many generations. Their ceramics stand out do their aesthetic simplicity and refined designs as well as their symbolic significance and expression of feminine sensibility. In 2017, Awajun ceramics were declared World Cultural Heritage by UNESCO for their artistic and cultural value.

The colors of the ceramics and their finely painted designs are derived from different colored clays as well as plant dyes. The semi gloss finish is achieved by applying plant resins.
